It’s always a sad time when we say goodbye to summer. This summer has been a huge harvest for the Kennebunk Community Garden. While there are still a few produce items like carrots left to come in, overall, the yield has brought in over 5,000 pounds of fresh produce right from their garden plots in West Kennebunk to the COS Produce Pantry held every Friday at St. Martha’s Church in Kennebunk. The largest amount of garden produce brought in one Friday so far has been 718 lbs! We are grateful to Mary Liz and Michelle, co-chairs for Maine Harvest for Hunger Committee and contact point persons for the KCG. Mary Liz is also a COS Board member and was a major player for bringing the partnership between Kennebunk Community Garden and COS.
The many neighbors that come every Friday are so thankful and appreciative for especially the fresh produce they get to take home that normally they could not afford at the supermarket. With the 2o or so volunteers that set up the Produce Pantry each Friday, we are so thankful for how COS is able to extend a helping hand to our neighbors with food insecurities.
This summer has been a boon crop and we thank all the gardeners like Gus who tend to the gardens so that we can have such bounty to give away to our neighbors at our Produce Pantry. Thank you so much Kennebunk Community Garden! This Winter, we are going to miss our friends from the Garden. But we are getting one-day closer each day to summer when we’ll see our friends again.
